The conversion work can be done in Japan before the car is exported, or it can be done in the UK once the car has arrived. Having said all of the above, do you have a choice about speedometer conversion? In some situations, yes you do! If the car is over 10 years old when it has its first MOT in the UK, you do not have to convert the speedometer. Many people will tell you it is a legal requirement for the MOT. This is incorrect. The car does have to have a speedometer, but the MOT regulations do not state that it has to read in miles per hour.
However, if the car is under 10 years old when it arrives in the UK, it will need to have an IVA test.
The speedometer will need to be in miles per hour for the car to pass this test. There are a few ways to convert the speedometer on an imported car. Two of them are electronic and one is more of a physical adjustment to the car. Speed is displayed in mph and distance is recorded in miles from the point of fitment onwards. They do not convert already recorded distance on the odometer from kilometers to miles. The speedometer dial face is amended to reflect the new units but is otherwise unchanged.
Distance will continue to be recorded in kilometers and it is acceptable in the UK to have speed and distance in different units.

Speedometer conversion often goes hand in hand with converting the odometer reading from kilometers to miles. From the point of conversion onwards, speed is displayed in mph and distance is recorded in miles. This changing of the odometer reading is one of the main reasons I like to avoid electronic speedometer conversion wherever possible. However, if the speedometer is converted using an electronic method, I agree that the odometer should be converted as well. It can get confusing for the speed to be in miles per hour but for the distance to have been recorded partly in kilometers and partly in miles.

These sensors have sensing area where an alternating electro-magnetic field is emitted, when a metal target enters the sensing area, eddy currents are induced in the target, which results in a change of state at the sensor output.

Using this we can make an arrangement that gives only one high pulse for each rotation of the motor. Counting pulses for one minute can give the Rotations per Minute. This project uses an Inductive Proximity sensor to detect the presence of a metal. Whenever a metal comes near the sensor, it can detect it.
Hence, this sort of sensor can be used to do a lot of things. For example, if we need to detect when a door is close, then we can attach a metal to the door and the sensor to the frame of the door. Whenever the door closes, the metal gets placed near the sensor and therefore we are able to detect that the door is closed. This same principle can be used to make a speedometer for a bike or any other vehicle in a non-contact way by attaching a metal to the wheel and a sensor is placed somewhere in the frame of the bike, the time taken for one revolution can be measured by counting the time interval between the two detections.
The setup is made as follows, a screw is connected to the rotating part of the motor and it is projected to small distance. The motor is powered by 12V power supply. The signal goes high when the screw is near to the sensor placed near the motor. So instead of using an interrupt and have to wait the interrupt interval to refresh the data, the data come in after each pulse is timed. Also, when using interrupts, you have limited resolution.
Example, 1 pulse counted over ms so 4 pulses per second or RPM and 2 pulses per ms so 8 pulses per second or RPM!!!

To get better resolution, you need a longer interrupt interval. But, At the same time longer interrupt interval will lead to slower response. As stated previously output will go high when metal is near the sensing area. The VCC of the sensor is connected to 5V. Load the program TX. The Firebird now pulls like a banshee, shifts swiftly, and with the overdrive, freeway cruising spins the engine around 1, rpm instead of 3, Life is great except for one thing the speedometer doesn't work.
In the push to swap this 21st Century drivetrain in your Richard Nixon-era cruiser, the speedometer went unheeded. The dilemma focuses on that OE mechanical speedometer. It uses a simple flexible cable to spin the needle, but your new electronic 4L60E only offers a two-wire electrical connection from something called a vehicle speed sensor VSS. While they both speak mph, they do so in completely different dialects.
There's no app that will solve this problem but there are several solutions. The mechanical avenue converts the 4L60E trans or a few late model manuals like the T56 and T5 to a mechanical cable drive extension housing.
A second option is to dump that original speedometer in favor of an aftermarket electric speedo. Depending upon your choice of gauges, Auto Meter, Dakota Digital, Speedhut, and many others, offer tons of options. This often requires a major instrument cluster facelift. A third possibility is to call a company like Redline Gauge Works to update that existing mechanical speedometer to electronic version. This price also varies depending upon the complexity of the conversion and the condition of your original speedometer.
All of these are excellent ways to go. There is one final option that is both affordable and, in terms of actual labor, offers the path of least resistance.
This involves using an electric motor to drive a cable to spin the stock speedometer. Prior efforts focused on using the VSS signal to command a small electric motor that would drive the speedo cable.
This is a great idea, but the actual execution fell far short of expectations accompanied with complaints of excessive noise and erratic performance. Our trans shop had just completed a 4L60E build for our El Camino and we faced this same speedometer quandary, so we decided to test the Box even before installing our new trans. When using the VSS signal, this will require calibration. However, this is also really simple, requiring the user to merely trigger the beginning and end of a measured mile using the supplied button.
Click once, travel a measured mile and click again and the speedometer is calibrated. If it got any easier they'd have to do it for you! One criticism of most GPS-based systems is that once the car begins to move, the system requires several minutes to acquire a signal and drive the speedometer. Speedhut addressed this issue with what they call the Hot Start connection. This maintains a live battery connection to the Box that saves its last location so the system can drive the speedometer in much less time than other GPS systems.
The Hot Start connection pulls an extremely low 25 micro-amps roughly 0. The physical specs on the SpeedBox 5. Wiring is also simple. One thing worth mentioning is that the SpeedBox can be used on any car that uses a mechanical speedometer.
